Ajuga Reptans ‘Black Scallop’

Ajuga reptans ‘Black Scallop’ is a cultivar discovered by Mike Tristram of the United Kingdom. It’s by far one of our favorites as well as a top seller. Its dark foliage almost appears black. It would go great in any dark themed garden, or as a contrast against something more yellow or chartreuse. ‘Black Scallop’ does great in containers and looks exceptional coupled with light or silver foliage plants. In addition, its spikes of blue flowers stand out against the dark foliage.

As with many ajugas, this plant spreads by above ground runners. After it flowers in spring, it sends out runners in all directions. If the runners are rooted, they are easily dug up before they are too well established. Ajuga can take full sun or partial shade. he more sun this cultivar receives, the darker the foliage will be.

2012 Northwest Flower and Garden Show

Although we didn’t have as grand a presence as in recent years, we helped out with constructing a modern “water wall”. (Go ahead and click on the image to display a larger version). In collaboration with designer Kristy Ditmore and nursery person Jamaie McAuliffe, the garden “Kodachrome – Give Us Nice Bright Colors” was born.

From the NWFGS website:

“Kodachrome” is an old Paul Simon song popular for its lyrics that paint a vivid picture in our minds of bright colors, the greens of summer and all the world is a sunny day! These visions can be true in your own outdoor space by creating a tapestry of plants with jewel-like colors and appealing textures. In a modern design with the musical sound of water, add wooded screens to compliment nature, and a mix of metal to reflect all of these elements in your own “space.” You can paint the picture in your mind – or better yet, just go enjoy!

Water cascaded down the polished stainless steel sheet imposed on a tiled glass background. We even got written up in the newspaper! Read the article in the Monroe Monitor.

Hellebores are a-bloomin’!

In continuing with our latest topic of winter blooming and fragrant plants, we present the Hellebore or Lenten Rose. We currently have quite the unique specimen here at the nursery. Have you heard of ‘Peppermint Ice’? Well we have it and it’s stunning. This particular variety was created by hybridizer Marietta O`Byrne.

Hellebores are low-maintenance, flower in winter to early spring, and are deer and rabbit resistant. They can adapt to almost any soil but are shade plants and need to be protected from the hot evening sun. Come on in and procure one for your garden!

Re:Treads flower pots

Do you recycle? WE have a great new product that is made from tires. The pots are great looking and it keeps some of the tires out of the landfill. They start at an 8 inch small cone and go up to a 19 inch wide basin. They start at 10.00 dollars and go up. Any sun loving plant loves growing with the extra heat from the black tire.

Creating an Outdoor Living Space

outdoorlivingThe placement of your space is an important consideration. Ideally you want it to be close to the house. Be sure to allow plenty of space outside your doorway. It should be easy to get in and out of your home, say, to safely carry food and drinks.

Do you like to cook? Your outdoor living space can be an extension of your kitchen.

There’s nothing more enjoyable than entertaining your friends outdoors.

You will need furniture! Make sure you have plenty of seating available. Add chairs, tables… perhaps even a couch. Arrange your furniture in a way that brings people together, face to face.

tubbsAs of late, more and more people are entertaining at home. This being said, people are striving to find ways to more effectively utilize the space they already have. The back yard is one such space. It’s not just for children and overgrown grass any more. It’s become an extension of the interior of the home. There is a growing trend of moving the indoors outside and creating living spaces such as family rooms and dining rooms in the backyard. The following are some ideas on how to do so.

Think about how you’re going to use the space. Take a slow walk around your backyard and take stock of what you have. What features are going to be important to you? Are you taking children and pets into consideration?

Accessories can make all the difference. Container gardens are good for adding color and interest. Try planting flowers and ornamental grasses in various containers. Shrubbery planted in containers can make a great privacy screen to shield you from the neighbors. Large colorful pillows will add contrast and be inviting to guests. Add some candles for quiet ambience. Try imagining things you already have in your home, that could be utilized outdoors.

outdoor2Of course having a roof over everything would be nice. Covered patios are one option. We’ve created many from cedar, which is weather-proof and beautiful to look at. Don’t have the money for a project so big? A pop-up tent awning may suffice. Or, bridge the gap between fancy and convenient with a decorative wrought iron framed canopy. Just want some shelter from the shade? A simple sun umbrella will do the trick just fine.

For night time use, you will want to add attractive outdoor lighting that will make your space perfect for evening entertaining. Low voltage lighting is actually very easy to install yourself. We sell a wide variety of lighting for every application in your garden. A string of white holiday lights to your deck railing or your or around the edge of an umbrella can also add ambience.

When you’ve got most of these things up and going, it’s time to sit and relax!

Comfortable Outdoor Furniture

crescendo_sling_dining_outdoor_chair_medium_6_mediumOur motto at Falling Water Designs is “Balance in your life, through beauty in your garden”. Our goal is to provide our customers a space to recharge and re-energize, or to relax and reflect. Getting back to nature doesn’t require a trip to the mountains or the beach, it can happen in your own garden. We don’t want you to just have a beautiful garden that you enjoy from the kitchen window, but an outdoor space that calls you out into it to spend time there. One way to get you to spend time in your garden is to ensure that you purchase comfortable outdoor furniture. When you choose bargain furniture like those pre-formed plastic stacking chairs or other uncomfortable furniture you’re likely to sit in it for only a few minutes until you decide you’d be more comfortable on the sofa inside the house. So choose furniture that is both comfortable and made for the outdoor environment. Some outdoor furniture is made to be under-cover in a protected space. Other furniture can stay out in the rain and still be fine. Choose first on comfort, then style. You should sit in the furniture before you buy it and really see if it is as comfortable as it looks. Sometimes the backs of the chairs are too reclined or the seat of the sofa is too deep to be comfortable, so try them out before you purchase.

Choose padded furniture that has UV protected cloth like “Sunbrella” fabric. Frames can be powder coated aluminum or hardwood such as teak. When possible choose hardwoods from managed forests. Sometimes it’s called plantation grown hardwood. This ensures that your teak furniture is not part of the de-forestation of the rain forests. It’s tempting to purchase those bold beautiful stripes or a bright print fabric, but it may be more sensible to choose a neutral colored fabric for long life, and spice up the furniture with inexpensive throw pillows that can be replaced or recovered when you tire of them. If you do choose a bright fabric or print, make sure that the covers are removable so when you tire of the fabric you can keep the frame and recover the cushions. You can spend a little or a lot on outdoor furniture, and I’ve noticed an increasingly wide variety of outdoor furniture in many of the “big box” retail chains.
