Helleborus foetidus Wester Flisk

Stinking Hellebore

Category:

Description

Highly valued in milder regions, for their winter effect in the garden. This strain forms a clump of deeply cut leathery green foliage on red stems, bearing upright sprays of nodding, cup shaped greenish flowers, each edged with reddish purple. The plant has a slightly skunky smell when in bloom. Flowers appear in late winter and very early spring. Performs best in regions with a mild maritime climate. Gardeners in colder climates would be wise to mulch around the base of the clump with leaves in very late fall.
