Nursery News
August is upon us, and for many, that may feel like the end of the gardening season. Yet we know here at Falling Water Designs and Falling Water Gardens, we prepare for the next phase of gardening.
August is when we continue to clear the parts of the garden that have bloomed, identify plants that may need trimming, and also clean pottery and decor from the current season.
We always tell our clients to enjoy their gardens and pond spaces with the late summer bloomers.

Featured Design & Installation Project
Rick has been hard at work doing garden designs all season. Here is one that has just been recently completed. Our customers are birders and have a garden that is just sod and some large fir trees in the back. The design includes increasing the patio, changing the shape of the lawn, resolving some drainage issues, and bringing in lots of good garden soil and appropriate plant material that can grow beneath established fir trees and are good for birds. It also includes a three-column basalt water feature and garden lighting.
Installation will begin in September so look for before and after pictures shortly!
Featured Koi: Tancho
Tancho is a beautiful snowy white koi with a large Hi marking on their heads. The round Hi covers as much area as possible between the eye and nose of the fish yet does not cover the eye or the nose. The edge must be sharp and the color must be deep red. The Hi should not spread to the shoulders or back and the body and the white body should be free of any imperfections. The Tancho also represents good fortune, love, and long life.
Fish Health
Those who have fish often come to us worried about fungal infections present on their fish. So how do you recognize a fungal infection, here are 4 quick identifiers:
- The fins of the fish are blood-streaked
- The fins appear frayed, tattered, ragged, split, and ‘fluffy’
- The head and mouth regions appear eroded or rotting covered with white cotton wool-like growths.
- There are off-white cotton-wool like tufts that develop around the mouth fins and on the body
If you believe your fish have such an infection, we have a variety of products that help to treat Fish Fungal infections, including PimaFix. This product is all-natural and good for both Koi and Goldfish, and rabidly treats fungal invections on both the body and the fins.

Cardinal Flower (Lobelia ‘Vulcan Red’)
The Lobelia has bright crimson-red flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds and lovely burgundy foliage. Goldfinches are said to enjoy the seeds produced after flowering. Perennial lobelias benefit from being divided every year or two. This plant flowers later in the summer.

This beautiful flower is perfect for the summer garden. The Lobella Speciosa is a vigorous, upright perennial featuring long spires of dark violet flowers atop dark green leaves flushed with purple from midsummer to early fall. The blossoms are a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
