Summer Hot Topics!

This month at the Nursery, we focus on summer maintenance of both ponds and landscapes. We want to remind everyone that while weed whackers are great, pulling those pesky weeds by the root is critical.

Mosquitos and other insects often plague our backyard spaces, especially when water is involved. Here at Falling Water Gardens, we have a variety of products that will help with mosquito control.

Plantwise, to help decrease pesky insects, consider planting the following:

  • Lavender: Repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes
  • Eucalyptus: Helps keep mosquitoes away but will also ward off sand flies, ticks, and more pests
  • Mint: Mint plants can repel spiders, ants, and mosquitoes. But be careful when you plant mint because these plants spread rapidly!
  • Lemongrass: Repels mosquitoes
  • Cat Nip: A member of the mint family, it contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which attracts cats but repels insects such as mosquitoes, flies, deer ticks, and cockroaches
  • Geraniums: repel leafhoppers and other types of insects, and is a mosquito repellent
  • Pitcher Plants: Trap and ingest insects
  • Marigolds: The scent from various types of marigolds repels aphids, mosquitoes, and even rabbits.
  • Nasturtiums: Repel whiteflies, squash bugs, aphids, many beetles, and cabbage loopers

We have a large inventory of plants, stop by and check out the flower/plant options we have in stock. We look forward to having you visit! The Garden & Fish Center is currently open daily from 10am to 6pm.

Featured Koi

Featured Koi: Karasu

The Karasu is a black Koi, with Karasu meaning Crow in Japanese. While their body and fins are black, they can have either an orange or white stomach. Karasu is said to bring good luck to any pond.

Wildlife Fish Theft Prevention

We have many customers that come to us and express their concern about keeping wildlife at bay from stealing their fish! Here at Falling Water Gardens, within the pond products section of our gift shop, we have a variety of products that can help with wildlife troubles.

One method would be to place a net over the pond. Watch the video below on how to net your pond.

Additionally, you may also consider a faux Owl or two, perhaps a metal Heron, as well as a spinning decor!

We have nets and tons of decor.

Featured Plants

The Heliotropium is a species of flowering plant native to South America. Growing to 1.2 m (3.9 ft) tall and broad, it is a bushy, evergreen, short-lived shrub with dense clusters of bright purple flowers, notable for its intense, rather vanilla-like fragrance. Here in the Pacific Northwest this is an annual plant, and is perfect for planting in pots!

Yellow Water Lily – Nymphaea ‘Joey Tomocik’ These flowers are shocking bright yellow. This is the brightest yellow of all the hardy water lilies. It is very free flowering and has a long blooming season. The pads are dark green and slightly mottled with purple. Hardy to zones 2-11.

Mrs. Perry D. Slocum has very fragrant semi-double blooms that open deep pink and change to yellow and then pale creamy yellow. The flowers are 9 to 12 inches across and very fragrant. This is a heavy bloomer and it is not uncommon to see 3 different colored flowers on the same plant, all in different stages of blooms.

Cushion Spurge gets its name from its cushion-like, perfectly dome-shaped habit. In late spring, the pale green leaves are topped with chrome-yellow bracts that shine brightly in the garden. If sited correctly, the leaves will turn red in the fall. A good selection for northern gardens and it is extremely drought tolerant. Best grown in dry, well-drained soils in full sun. Appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. However, clumps tend to open up and lose their attractive cushion shape in too much shade. Quite tolerant of poor soils, including rocky, sandy ones. Freely self-seeds. Promptly remove spent flowers (shearing plants to shape is one option) to prevent any unwanted self-seeding.

An egg-shaped plant, well-branched. Specially cultivated for resistance to climatic conditions. Excellent results both in hot sunny weather and during rainy summers. Plants have a self-cleaning ability, there is no need to remove past blossoms or ovaries, continuous flowering until frosts.

Weddings & Your Events at Falling Water Gardens

We asked some of our couples why they chose to get married at Falling Water Gardens and many of them agreed (in addition to the gorgeous gardens, rustic glamping tents, and relaxed atmosphere) that it is our relaxed vendor policy.  We allow YOU to choose which caterer, photographer, bartender, DJs, etc that you want to have contribute to your Big Day. We don’t want to have to restrict your style and budget to use a preferred vendor. If you want an extravagant, gourmet, 8-course catered meal – go for it! But if you’d prefer to just order pizza for your guests, that’s fine, too. Are you planning to have a huge pop star perform at your wedding, or maybe you’re okay with just playing your Spotify list over our speakers?  Falling Water Gardens welcomes any of your vendors. And if you need any help, we’re happy to recommend some talented, local wedding professionals. We are still booking for 2022 (and beyond!). Contact us to schedule a tour and take advantage of making YOUR wedding day truly reflect YOU.
