Snohomish Koi Pond Install
When a Snohomish homeowner reached out to Falling Water Designs, they had a natural pond on their property—but it wasn’t quite the peaceful backyard feature they had envisioned.
The existing pond was consistently muddy and located far from the house, making it difficult to enjoy. Our goal was to create a beautiful, functional water feature that would bring the pond closer to the home and make it a true focal point of the property.
A Brand-New Koi Pond
We designed and built a 22′ x 12′ x 4′ deep koi pond, with a capacity of approximately 6,000 gallons. By relocating the pond closer to the house, the homeowners can now enjoy their water feature from much more of the property.
The new pond was constructed with all-new equipment and supplies, including:
25-foot waterfall and stream for a natural, flowing look
Skimmer to help keep the pond surface clean
Filter-fall for efficient water filtration and added movement
Large bead filter for advanced mechanical and biological filtration
Large UV sterilizer to help maintain clear, healthy water
Inline pump for reliable water circulation
Terrestrial and underwater lighting to showcase the pond both day and night
Completed in Just Four Days
From the initial transformation to the finishing touches, this project was completed in just four days—turning an underused, muddy area into a beautiful koi pond and destination right outside the home.
The finished pond combines natural beauty with modern pond technology, creating a space the homeowners can enjoy for years to come.

Ochiba
One of Rick’s favorites! Ochiba have a soft silver-gray or blue-gray base with warm bronze, copper, or brown markings. Their name translates to “autumn leaves on the water,” which perfectly captures their beautiful, natural pattern. Like Chagoi, Ochiba are known for being exceptionally friendly and often become hand-feeders.
Soragoi:
These beautiful solid gray to silver-blue koi feature a subtle, net-like scale pattern. Soragoi are known for growing very large and for their calm, docile personalities. They’re a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a big, friendly pond companion.
Denver Water Lily
Add timeless beauty to your pond with Nymphaea ‘Denver’, a popular and shade-tolerant hardy water lily. Available for $45, this stunning variety features elegant creamy-white double blooms that stand beautifully above green leaves accented with distinctive red mottling.
Easy to Care For
Nymphaea ‘Denver’ is a great choice for adding color and interest to your water garden without a lot of maintenance.
- Planting: Use heavy clay loam or a dedicated aquatic planting soil.
- Light: Performs best in full sun but is also known for its shade tolerance.
- Fertilizing: Feed with aquatic fertilizer tablets every 3–4 weeks throughout the growing season.
- Maintenance: Remove yellowing leaves and spent flowers at the base to keep your pond looking clean and your water lily thriving.
With its beautiful double blooms and distinctive foliage, Nymphaea ‘Denver’ is an easy-care favorite for water gardens and ponds.
Sedum
Looking for a plant that thrives with minimal fuss? Sedum, also known as stonecrop, is a tough, drought-tolerant succulent that’s perfect for sunny gardens, rock gardens, containers, and low-maintenance landscapes.
These resilient plants actually prefer a little neglect and reward you with attractive foliage and beautiful blooms.
Easy to Care For
Sedum is happiest when you give it plenty of sun and avoid overwatering.
Sunlight: Plant in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Too much shade can lead to weak, leggy growth and fewer blooms.
Watering: Water newly planted sedum regularly while it gets established. Once established, allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and water only during extended dry spells.
Pruning: Remove dead or dried stems in early spring or late fall. Creeping varieties can also be trimmed back if they begin spreading beyond their desired area.
With its drought tolerance, easy-care nature, and ability to thrive in poor soils, sedum is an excellent choice for gardeners who want beautiful plants without a lot of maintenance.
Astilbe
This compact, shade-loving perennial makes a beautiful addition to woodland gardens, borders, and shady planting beds.
Red Astilbe features deep red flower buds that open into rich red-purple, feathery plumes, complemented by attractive bronze-green, lacy foliage. Its elegant blooms add height, texture, and plenty of color to areas where many other plants struggle.
Pollinator-Friendly & Easy to Grow
Astilbe is also a wonderful choice for a pollinator-friendly garden, attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators with its showy blooms.
And there’s an added bonus: Red Astilbe is highly resistant to deer and rabbits, making it a great option for gardens where browsing wildlife can be a challenge.
Echinacea
Add long-lasting color and pollinator appeal to your garden with Echinacea, commonly known as coneflowers.
Coneflowers typically bloom from summer into fall, providing weeks of vibrant color while attracting bees, butterflies, and birds to the garden. They’re also wonderfully low-maintenance once established, making them a great choice for sunny landscapes.
Easy to Grow & Care For
Echinacea is a resilient perennial that doesn’t need much pampering to thrive.
Sunlight: Plant in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best blooms.
Soil: Choose well-drained soil. Coneflowers tolerate poor, rocky, and even clay soils but don’t like wet, soggy roots, especially during winter.
Watering: Water regularly while plants are getting established. Once established, Echinacea is drought-tolerant and requires relatively little water.
Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers throughout summer to encourage more blooms. In fall, consider leaving some seed heads standing to provide a natural food source for birds during the winter.
