Koi Pond Spotlight in Lake Stevens

Our Lake Stevens customers dreamt of a Koi pond, and we made it happen!

Check out their fresh 12’x14′ Koi pond that dives 4′ deep, crafted right in their backyard.

It’s more than just a pond:

  • 8′ waterfall/stream for that soothing water sound.
  • Out-of-pond pump to keep things flowing.
  • Skimmer and up-flow filter for clean, clear water.
  • UV sterilizer and bead filter for healthy fish.
  • Underwater and land lighting to show off the pond day and night.

Ready for your own backyard transformation? Dive in and let’s talk!

Bellevue Transformation Alert

Let’s talk about a Bellevue garden that went from headache to head-turner.

Our customer had a leaky “pondless” water feature that was more trouble than tranquility.

So, what did we do? We rolled up our sleeves and started fresh.

First step: Out with the old water feature. It’s demo day!

Next up: We crafted a brand new “pondless” water feature. We wanted drama (the good kind). We added fill dirt to build up a hill, making the water feature pop with an extended grandeur at 15 feet long.

Final touches: Good garden soil, new plants to add life, and fresh mulch to tie it all together.

The result? A stunning, hassle-free backyard focal point our Bellevue customer can enjoy without the worry.

Dreaming of a backyard upgrade? You know who to call.

How many fish can you have?

Wondering about adding some finned friends to your pond next year? Here’s the no-nonsense guide to do it right:

Rule of Thumb: 1 inch of fish for every 10 gallons of water. But there’s more to it.

  1. Check Your Pond Size: Grab those measurements—length, width, depth—then calculate your gallons.
  2. Know Your Fish: Koi are bigger and messier compared to goldfish; they need more room.
  3. Think Big: Plan for the adult size of your fish, not the size they are now.
  4. Filtration & Aeration Matter: A solid system means happier fish in larger numbers.
  5. Depth Is Key: Aim for at least 18 inches to keep fish cozy during cold months.
  6. Patience Pays Off: Give your pond time to get ready for its new residents.

Goldfish vs. Koi: More goldfish in the same space? Yes. Koi need about 35 gallons per inch because of their size.

Calculate Like a Pro:

  • Find your pond’s volume in cubic feet (length x width x average depth), convert to gallons (multiply by 7.5).
  • Apply the rule: Total gallons / 10 = how many inches of fish you can happily home.
  • Adjust based on whether you’re team goldfish or team koi.

Pro Tips:

  • Go Slow: Introduce your fish in phases.
  • Watch That Water: Keep an eye on water quality.
  • Future Goals: Decide on a show-stopping few or a bustling community.

Umbrella Plant (Cyperus alternifolius)

Say hello to the Umbrella Plant, a stunning aquatic perennial perfect for ponds, water gardens, and bog gardens!

Where it thrives:

  • Consistently moist soil or standing water up to 18 inches deep.
  • Full sun to part shade.

Why it’s amazing:

  • Features triangular stems with bold, umbrella-shaped bracts.
  • Green year-round in warmer climates.
  • Adds a tropical vibe to your garden!

Care instructions:

  • Plant in a pond, water garden, bog garden, or a patio water container.
  • Clean up dead stems in fall and fertilize in spring/summer.
  • Indoors? Keep soil damp and feed monthly during growing seasons.

Fast facts:

  • Can grow up to 6 feet tall in frost-free zones or 2–3 feet in colder areas.
  • Hardy in Zones 8–9 with roots that regrow after frost.
  • May become invasive in warm climates, so plant in containers to stop the spread.

Don’t forget about our Buy 3, Get 1 Free plant sale! Mix & match aquatic and terrestrial plants for a deal you won’t want to miss.

Sarracenia Carnivorius Pitcher Plant

Though thriving in wet, boggy areas, remember, Sarracenia are not your typical aquatic plants.

They excel in wetlands but aren’t submerged water-dwellers like water lilies.

Key Needs:

  • Consistent moisture with a peat moss and perlite soil mix.
  • Mineral-free watering. Use rainwater, distilled, or reverse osmosis water.
  • At least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • They live off insects they trap, so no fertilizer needed.
  • Trim browning leaves in spring before new blooms.

Temperatures:

  • Sarracenia are perfectly hardy in the PNW and most are hardy to zone 5 and 14 degrees.

Get your green thumbs ready for Sarracenia, and keep it simple: water smart, sunbathe well, and let them rest in winter.

Come on in today and grab yours!

Liriope Muscari 'Big Blue'

Liriope Muscari ‘Big Blue’, also known as Lily Turf, packs a punch with its lush, dark green leaves and eye-catching lilac-purple flowers that pop up in late summer. Not just a pretty face, this perennial also produces blooms that give away into shiny black berries until the winter.

Hardy, compact, and evergreen, this tuberous perennial thrives in dry shade and can easily substitute lawn grass.

Looking for garden drama? Plant it in big groups or let it flow like a river through your garden beds. It’s a game-changer for edges along paths or pools, and it fills under-tree spaces like a dream.

Here are the quick facts:

  • Grows 12-18 inches tall and wide.
  • Loves light, acidic, moist but well-drained soils.
  • Sun lover? Yes, but also partial to full shade friendly.
  • It’s tough: deer and rabbit resistant, plus handles heat, humidity, and drought like a champ.

Leucothoe Fontanesiana 'Nana'

Looking for a robust, colorful addition to your garden this season?

Meet the Dog Hobble ‘Nana’, a versatile shrub that brings movement and color with its evergreen leaves – shifting from green to purple to red and blooming with white flowers in spring.

Key Details:

  • Plant Type: Evergreen shrub
  • Foliage: Green, purple, and red
  • Mature Size: 2-3 ft tall, 4-6 ft wide
  • Flowers: White blooms in the spring
  • Growing Conditions: Thrives in acidic, rich, and well-drained soil; best in sun to shade; Zones 5a-10b

‘Nana’ stands out with its low-growing, compact form and glossy, lance-shaped leaves. In autumn and winter, it transforms into striking red or bronze-purple hues. Position it beneath taller shrubs, against north or east-facing foundations, or amidst rhododendrons in a woodland setting.
