A great way to extend the time you spend in the garden is to install a fire pit. Fire pits create a focal point in the garden and a great place to gather friends and family. Many of us dream of a covered outdoor entertainment space with a built in fireplace, but for many that is beyond our budget. A far more affordable option is an inexpensive fire pit.
Falling Water Designs suggests not building an actual pit in the ground but rather a raised “pit”. Why? Because in our rainy weather pits in the ground fill up with water. They are a hazard if you have small children or toddlers who might fall into the pit when it is lit. If you burn real wood the fire can’t draw oxygen down into the hole as well as it can in a raised fire pit and it is a pain to get on your knees to clean out the ash and char left after a real fire.
For some the authenticity of a real wood fire is what they want but we suggest when possible install gas or use propane for the fire pit. It is much safer and easier to simply light a gas fire pit that can be shut off when you are ready to go inside than to worry if a real wood fire has been properly extinguished. Real wood blows smoke in everyone’s face and makes their clothes smell. As well real wood requires you to clean up the left over ash and char before it blows about the garden.
Falling Water Designs installs many fire pits each year. We have created beautiful boulders cut in half and polished, raised pits that look like stacked stone, formal tiled fire pits suitable to be sitting on a deck, and fire and water combinations. A custom fire pit by Falling Water Designs is far more affordable than you might imagine.
